Pilgrimage Trail Sparks Curiosity in Year 5

Posted: 11th November 2022

Igniting Wonder – Year 5’s trip to Ely Cathedral sparked their curiosity and developed their understanding of the cross curricular work they are doing about pilgrimage this half term. This spectacular building and particularly the stained glass ignited the children’s wonder and will also be the inspiration for their design work in Art.

The aims of the trip are to introduce our learning about pilgrimage, and for the architecture of this amazing building to be the inspiration for the pupils’ design work with Mr Earley.

They started the morning learning about how stained glass windows are designed and made, and the children will use this information for an art project later in the term.

The children were certainly curious about why such a significant religious building had been constructed here and so explored a ‘Pilgrimage Trail’ through the interior. This will provide much food for thought in the RE components of our Global Studies lessons this term.

We also studied the architecture and history of the building of the cathedral, gaining insights and knowledge that will be applied in upcoming DT lessons, and discussed in a historical context in Global Studies.
