World Scholar’s Cup Success

Posted: 8th March 2024

Last weekend 2 teams of Year 8 pupils took part in the World Scholar’s Cup.  The World Scholar’s Cup started in Korea in 2007 and is global. It is an academic tournament that is a bit different from traditional academic competitions and conferences: it’s a celebration of the joy of learning, an enrichment opportunity that motivates students not just to demonstrate their existing strengths but to discover new ones. Instead of focusing on memorising facts, WSC is all about applying them and relating them to the world around us. This is the first time that Holmwood House has ever entered the competition and the teams did extremely well.

It all started early on Sunday morning, 6 of our Year 8 pupils went to compete in the World Scholar’s Cup Regional Round at St Theresa’s in Effingham, Surrey. This consisted of 2 days of debating, collaborative writing, challenges and competitions to put their knowledge and skills to the test. Teams had travelled from around the country as well as flying in from Guernsey and Switzerland. The junior division consisted of over 40 teams and over 200 students were in attendance.

Our 2 teams did Holmwood House and themselves proud, made lots of new friends and came home with alpacas and more medals than B.A.Baracus! Some of the highlights were:

  • Millie S was voted as one of the top debaters and formed part of a panel for the debate showcase.
  • Jesse O was the only student from the bowl to bring home a larger global round alpaca, he won the “gravity challenge”!
  • Jesse O also wrote the 1st place History essay.

Impressively both teams have qualified for the Global Round with Annabel, Millie and Olive achieving a silver qualification (top 20) & Benedict, Ethan and Jesse achieving gold (4th place) – more information to follow in the summer term!
