From the Head

Posted: 8th July 2022

Dear Parents,

Rehearsals are apace, rooms are being tidied out, kids are really excited about their holidays, trips are returning (with very tired children and a lot of washing). I will say this tomorrow, but thank you for making me feel so welcome this year. It has been a year of growth and understanding for me, dealing with the challenges of COVID, understanding the school, setting out a vision, listening to you and ensuring that what we offer here keeps improving day by day. The buzz of Holmwood, of happy children excited by their learning, of families on Sports Day or in the Jubilee Hall, makes this a very special school.

Today’s assembly included farewells to leaving staff, and the Year 8s moving to pastures new, but also some challenges. The challenges are to reflect upon the year, to consider what they are most proud of, a challenge they have overcome and what they are looking forward to next year. Some of the pre-prep classes had sent in theirs beforehand – and the things they are proud of include getting better at writing their letters, getting show ups, and swimming through an underwater hoop. Please ask them what they are proud of and what they are looking forward to?

I also talked to the children about reading a good book, helping at home, and learning through visiting places. Walking along the north Devon coast is a geography lesson in its own right, visiting a castle enables a chance to talk about the history and consider the architecture. Do go and see some outdoor drama or a concert. While I am on Drama there is an amazing show in London that tickets go on sale for in July – https://thisislabyrinth.com/alice-adventures-underground/ – I took my family pre-COVID and they loved it. While I am on drama, nothing matches the ~Edinburgh fringe – but do keep space in your diaries for this next Easter: https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/festivals-series/imagine-childrens-festival. There are not many tickets left for the ‘Hundred’ and it would be a very late night for little people but we are very much looking forward to seeing Alyssa Healy bat with the Northern Superchargers this summer at the Oval.

Have a very good summer. Thank you for everything!
