Year 1 – Paws, Claws & Whiskers

Posted: 18th March 2022

Year 1 have been having a great time with their new theme ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’. We have been enjoying a range of animal stories during our English lessons and our favourite so far has definitely been ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea’. We used this story as the starting point for our own creative stories about different animals which came to tea. As you can imagine we had lots of exciting ideas including a T-Rex, a leopard, a koala, a panda, a unicorn, a butterfly, a cheetah, a zebra and a wolf! The children were also very imaginative about the foods these animals ate when they came to tea. In our art lesson we used pastels to create drawings of tigers and these have made a super new display in our classroom.

In Global Studies the children have been fascinated to learn about the continents of the world and to explore the world map. We looked at where in the world tigers live naturally as well as the location of other familiar countries.

Recently we welcomed a very special visitor to school to help us learn about animals. Mrs Duce bought her very friendly pet dog to visit the children and we had a lovely time finding out about her pet and all the things she needs to do to keep her happy and healthy. We also enjoyed some cuddles too! Earlier in the week we learnt about writing questions and using question marks and then we used what we had learnt to write a list of questions to ask Mrs Duce.
