Year One have been having great fun with their new theme ‘Enchanted Woodland.’ We started off spending some time outside looking at trees. We enjoyed looking at similarities and differences in their shape, size, leaves and trunk. We used a tree identification sheet to try and identify the trees we saw and looked to see if they were evergreen or deciduous. We used crayons to make rubbings of the trunk of the trees to investigate different bark patterns and then we reflected on which was our favourite tree and the reasons why.
In Literacy we used the book ‘Leaf Man’ by Lois Ehlert as the starting point for some imaginative writing. After enjoying the story we created our own ‘Leaf Man’ or ‘Leaf Lady’ characters using some beautiful autumn leaves. The children then wrote some short stories about their characters and the adventures they had. They tried hard to use some of the descriptive language from the book in their own stories.
