We were delighted to see the return of the Annual Holmwood House Produce Show on Friday 17 September. As always, the parents and pupils astounded us with their wonderful entries. The Jubilee Hall was full of intricately decorated cakes, wonderful fresh produce from allotments and gardens, sweet jams, potent spirits and creative, artistic entries. The aroma of sweet peas, chocolate cakes and raspberry vodka filled the air.
Our judges for the day, Mr Walter Scott, Chairman of Wilkin & Son, and his colleague Ms Liz Baker, Marketing Manager at Wilkin & Son, were superb and we are very grateful for their time and professionalism. Going straight to their area of expertise, they started by judging the jams category and were delighted by the Mirabelle Jam (a wonderful plum jam) submitted by the Danby Family that took best in category in the Baking and Preserves category.
Many of the categories proved tough to judge because of the exceptionally high standard of entries. This was particularly true of the painting and drawings, soft fruits and apples, as well as the Victoria Sandwiches and the cakes containing vegetables. The latter was a new category this year and easily one of the most popular. Who knew a cake containing peas, courgette or beetroot could be so delicious?!
Choosing a best in category was a very tough task but for Mr Scott and Ms Baker, the Came family’s enormous pumpkin was a stand out in the Produce category. The Parmenter-Roberts Family’s beautifully creative hedgehogs made from fruit won the judges’ praise in the Family category and, on counting the votes from visitors to the show, was awarded the Best in Show trophy. Congratulations!
We would like to thank the Friends of Holmwood House for hosting a lovely cake sale alongside the show and all the parents who so kindly baked such delicious items. It was wonderful to see so many families milling about on the front lawn in the sunshine.
We look forward to the eighth Holmwood House Produce Show next year!
