From the Headmaster…

Dear Parents

What a wonderful week of school events!  I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the children compete in the various Sports Day sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the BV Collaborative Learning Day, the amazing Non-Frinton Staycation complete with Pony Rides and an ice cream van!  The staff, as ever, have bent over backwards to ensure the children have had a great time and my thanks go to them once again for re-doubling their efforts at a time of the year when energy levels may be beginning to droop somewhat.  And next week, the Years 6 and 7, having had their separate Welsh trips cancelled due to Covid, will enjoy an amazing 4 days of adventure and challenge at various outdoor pursuit centres.  I am very much looking forward to the Year 8 Showcase this evening ahead of their residential PGL trip from Sunday.

In addition to enjoying seeing the children’s involvement, it has been a great pleasure to see so many more of you, the parents.  I know that restrictions have meant disappointment for some, but your support at these events has been wonderful and it has been super to see you all again.  I look forward to seeing many of you at my farewell drinks events on Monday and Tuesday, and at Speech Day.

As I contemplate my final week as Headmaster at Holmwood House, I have been reflecting on what makes our school so wonderful.  Our DNA is all about the children; all about them as individuals; all about their personal journeys through life. If we are believed in as people, we may believe in ourselves; if we are recognised and praised for the good things we do, we will thrive; if we are continually stretched and challenged, we will continually grow.  Your children are on a journey; a wonderful part of their lives that they will never have again.  It is our job, yours and ours, to make that as good a journey as possible. After 33 years in education, I looked back to my first job interview in Hemel Hempstead in 1988, in which I was asked why I wanted to be a teacher.  Like many of us in the profession have done in response to that question, I answered, ‘I want to make a difference.’  I hope I have!

Have a wonderful weekend.
