Little Steps…to School: Tiny Tools, Big Skills
Part 1 of our Little Steps…to School series of tips for school readiness. Getting your child ready for Reception.
If your child starts school in Reception in September 2027, it can feel like there’s plenty of time. But the months between now and then are a wonderful window for building the small skills that make the first day, and the first term, feel easier and happier.
This series shares simple, low-pressure ideas you can try at home. It also follows what we do at Holmwood House’s monthly Little Steps playgroup, where every session includes a school readiness activity. This month, that activity was all about tweezers, so it’s where we’re starting.
Why do hand skills matter before school?
When we think of “school ready”, letters and numbers often come to mind first. But before a child can write, they need the physical foundations that make writing possible and comfortable.
- Finger strength. Holding a pencil for any length of time takes real strength in the small muscles of the hands and fingers. Children who haven’t had many chances to build this strength can tire quickly, grip awkwardly or become frustrated with writing tasks.
- Hand-eye coordination. Forming letters means looking at the page while controlling exactly where the pencil goes. Practising precise movements, like picking up a tiny object and placing it in a small space, trains the eyes and hands to work together.
- A controlled pincer grip. Squeezing tweezers uses the same thumb-and-finger movement that later supports a comfortable pencil grip.
- Concentration and confidence. These activities ask a child to focus, persevere and try again. Each success builds the “I can do it” feeling that carries into the classroom.
None of this needs to feel like practice. For a three- or four-year-old, it’s simply play.
Tweezers activities to try at home
Start with larger, chunkier tweezers or tongs (child-friendly ones are easy to find), then move to smaller tweezers as confidence grows.
- Pom-pom transfer. Use tweezers to move pom-poms from a bowl into the sections of an egg box or muffin tin. Sort by colour to add some extra thinking.
- Feed the monster. Decorate a cardboard box or tub with a big mouth and googly eyes. Your child “feeds” it with cotton wool balls, pom-poms or scrunched tissue paper.
- Counting and dice games. Roll a dice, then pick up that many buttons or pom-poms with the tweezers. Maths and fine motor practice in one go.
- Bug hunt. Hide plastic mini-beasts in a tray of rice, lentils or shredded paper and have your child rescue them with tweezers.
- Tweezer collage. Pick up small scraps of tissue paper or foam shapes and place them on sticky-backed paper to make a picture.
- Frozen treasure. Freeze small toys or beads in a shallow tray of ice and let your child pick out the treasure as it thaws. Warm water makes it even better.
Nature tweezers. On a walk, collect leaves, petals and tiny twigs, then use tweezers to arrange them into a pattern or a face.
A few top tips
- Little and often. Five minutes a few times a week is plenty. Stop while it’s still fun.
- Stay close. Tweezers, buttons, beads and needles all need adult supervision, and small items are a choking risk for young children.
- Let them lead. If it’s tricky, offer larger items or bigger tweezers rather than stepping in. Some wobbles are part of the learning.
- Notice effort, not perfection. “You kept trying, and you got it!” goes a long way.
- Use your child’s interests. Dinosaurs, fairies, diggers or sparkly gems can turn any activity into an adventure.
