GCSEs Years 10 – 11

Welcome to the GCSE Years at Holmwood House

Years 10 and 11 mark an exciting and important phase in your child’s education—a time of focus, maturity, and growing independence. At Holmwood House, we see these years not only as preparation for what comes next, but as a valuable and enriching stage in their own right.

The GCSE curriculum provides structure, challenge, and choice. At its heart lie the core academic subjects: English Language and Literature, Mathematics, and the Sciences—Biology, Chemistry and Physics. These essential disciplines provide a strong foundation for every pupil.

Beyond the core, pupils can shape their own academic journey through a wide range of optional subjects. Whether they wish to explore areas of special interest or maintain a broad curriculum, the options process encourages them to reflect on their strengths, passions, and future aspirations.

We see the GCSE years as a time of growth—intellectually, personally, and academically. While these qualifications prepare pupils for further study, they also offer rich and rewarding learning experiences in themselves, helping to develop the habits, skills, and confidence that will support lifelong success.

At Holmwood House, every child is known and valued as an individual, and this strong foundation of support ensures that each pupil receives tailored guidance throughout the options process. We encourage open conversations with subject teachers and tutors, and believe that, with the close partnership between school and home, pupils are well-placed to choose a combination of subjects that reflects their strengths, interests, and future ambitions.

Non- Examined Curriculum

Alongside their examined subjects, pupils at Holmwood House continue to benefit from a rich and well-rounded curriculum that includes important non-examined areas such as PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education), Games, and a wide range of enrichment opportunities.

These elements play a vital role in supporting pupils’ personal development, wellbeing, and physical health, while also fostering key life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience. Our enrichment programme enables pupils to explore new interests, develop confidence beyond the classroom, and gain a broader perspective on the world—ensuring a balanced and fulfilling school experience throughout the GCSE years.

Pastoral Care in Years 10 & 11 – A Culture of Care and Confidence

At Holmwood House, pastoral care remains central to every pupil’s experience, especially during the crucial final years of senior school. As academic demands grow, so too does our commitment to supporting the emotional, social, and personal wellbeing of our pupils.

Our Year 10 and 11 pastoral framework is designed to help pupils thrive as they prepare for GCSEs and life beyond school. It ensures that each individual feels known, valued, and supported—every step of the way.

What sets our senior pastoral care apart:

  • Personalised Support: Tutors and pastoral staff build strong, supportive relationships with pupils, providing guidance that reflects each individual’s academic, emotional, and social needs—something especially vital during the pressures of the exam years.
  • Leadership and Responsibility: Pupils are given meaningful roles within school life—developing confidence, maturity, and a sense of purpose.
  • Strong Relationships: We prioritise trust and open communication between pupils, staff, and parents—creating a culture where pupils feel safe, heard, and understood.
  • Future-Ready Mindset: Careers guidance, interview preparation, and mentoring help pupils explore their interests and prepare for sixth form, apprenticeships, or other post-16 pathways.

At Holmwood House, pastoral care isn’t just a support system—it’s the foundation for confident, capable young people ready to take their next steps.
