Performance, participation and enrichment

Sport at Holmwood House

At Holmwood, sport is viewed as a cornerstone of personal development and well-being. From the age of three, children are introduced to movement and play by specialist staff. This early engagement, grounded in Cognitive Science and the teaching methods outlined in Doug Lemov’s Coach’s Guide to Teaching, ensures that sport is not only enjoyable but also meaningful. Pupils don’t just take part—they grow in confidence, develop key skills, and understand the game.

A key strength of Holmwood’s provision is its access to outstanding coaching. Pupils benefit from the expertise of external professionals—such as a Welsh Masters hockey player, the Head of Braintree Netball Club, and a Northampton Saints rugby coach—working alongside dedicated in-house staff. This partnership approach ensures high-level instruction across multiple sports. The results speak volumes: six county hockey players and five county cricket players emerged from a Year 8 cohort of just 28 pupils. Meanwhile, the U11 Girls’ victory in the Essex Netball Cup—achieved with a team selected from only 15 pupils—is a shining example of how tailored, high-quality coaching delivers outstanding outcomes.

Beyond netball and hockey, Holmwood pupils excel across the board. The school celebrated an IAPS Squash Champion, and its swimming teams regularly succeed in IAPS Aquathlons and Galas, thanks to specialist swimming coaches. The school also supports more niche sports, with the Clay Pigeon Shooting Team undertaking specialist training to compete at IAPS level.

Holmwood’s facilities are exceptional for a school of our size and are fully integrated into the curriculum and co-curricular offering. A standout feature is the on-site Rackets Centre, where all our primary pupils spend part of their Autumn term receiving focused squash and tennis training. These sessions not only improve sporting skill but also enhance gross motor development and classroom concentration. Sport is inclusive and central to school life—every child from Year 3 onwards represents the school, often weekly, fostering teamwork, resilience, and a deep sense of community.

The sporting experience at Holmwood reaches far beyond the pitch. Events such as parent vs. child matches, staff vs. pupil games, and a recent parent and child tennis tournament promote community engagement and fun. The now-famous “match teas” create an inviting atmosphere for families and friends to connect. Perhaps most importantly, the joy and enthusiasm pupils show often lead them to join local clubs, signalling a lasting love of sport.

Whether it’s the determined sprint across a muddy rugby pitch, or the focused stillness before a serve in tennis, the fields and halls of Holmwood are alive with the energy, pride, and pure joy of children growing through sport. Holmwood cultivates not just athletes, but well-rounded, resilient individuals with a lifelong passion for sport.

Music and Drama

At Holmwood House, our approach to Music and Drama is rooted in the belief that participation, enjoyment, and appreciation of the performing arts should be a universal experience. We aim to cultivate a lifelong love of the arts and provide every child with a rich source of pleasure and cultural capital.

All children take part in one of the school’s five annual large-scale drama productions — recent highlights include Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Oliver and Matilda. Up to the age of ten, every child sings in a choir, exploring a wide range of musical styles.

In Year 3, all pupils learn a string instrument as part of our ongoing commitment to music education. This tuition takes place in their music lessons and culminates in a performance at the Summer Concert.  Many children then continue with the

Individual tuition is available in most orchestral instruments, as well as piano, voice, electric and classical guitar, and drum kit. LAMDA tuition and dance classes (ballet, modern, and musical theatre) are also offered as optional extras in the younger years.

At the heart of all concerts and productions is the nurturing of each child’s confidence and self-expression.

For those with a particular talent or passion, Holmwood House offers opportunities to achieve higher levels of performance. Termly ABRSM and LAMDA exams provide a framework for progress and excellence.

Additional ensembles, including a string quartet, small vocal group, and several rock bands, are formed depending on student interest and ability. We actively encourage children to create their own bands and ensembles, supporting their initiative and creativity in alignment

Art and Design Technology

At Holmwood, we offer exceptional Art and Design Technology (DT) opportunities, nurturing artistic talent and practical skills from the early years through to senior levels.

Our spacious, well-lit art studio, dedicated kiln room and DT lab provide the perfect environment for artistic exploration. We emphasize creativity, self-expression, and visual literacy, guiding pupils to discover their unique artistic voice.

Pupils are exposed to a wide range of media, including:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Printmaking
  • Mixed media

We focus on developing both traditional skills and contemporary approaches to art, encouraging independent thinking, risk-taking, and creative problem-solving. Through regular themed projects, pupils explore cross-curricular topics and delve into cultural and historical art movements, analysing the work of influential artists.

We celebrate our pupils’ accomplishments with vibrant displays across the school and in exhibitions. For budding young artists, we offer after-school clubs, competitions, and enrichment opportunities to further ignite their passion.

Design Technology: Innovate and Create

Our Design Technology program is all about hands-on, practical learning that builds real-world skills in design, construction, and innovation. Pupils gain proficiency across a range of materials and techniques, including:

  • Wood
  • Plastics
  • Textiles
  • Electronics

Projects are specifically designed to develop essential skills in planning, measuring, designing, making, and evaluating. We integrate digital technology and software to enhance modern design thinking, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, function, and aesthetics in all projects.

Our dedicated workshops and equipment support safe and independent learning, while opportunities for collaborative work and design challenges foster teamwork. Pupils are encouraged to prototype, test, and iterate, building resilience and adaptability vital for future success. School trips help to consolidate learning in the classroom and past Art and DT trips have included visits to art galleries, the Henry Moore Museum and a factory to understand design and production processes

Beyond the curriculum, our school offers exciting after-school activities featuring a variety of arts and crafts, providing even more avenues for pupils to explore their creative potential.
