Preschool

Holmwood House Preschool is situated within the EYFS building on our rural 25-acre main school campus, at Lexden near Colchester in Essex.

Our Preschool provides an outstanding space for preschool children to learn and develop. The Preschool offers a wonderfully nurturing environment for children aged 2 – 4 years and it is a seamless transition through the EYFS stages from Preschool into our Reception class which is in the same building. Parents with children of this age can also choose between the Preschool and the Holmwood House Nursery. You can read more about Holmwood House Nursery here.

Our Preschool children benefit from their own large rooms and garden area at the main Holmwood House site, but the team can also draw on all the facilities and specialist teaching that the main school has to offer. Above all, we are passionate about igniting curiosity and fostering a life-long love of learning.

Our learning approach

At Holmwood House Preschool, we provide a warm, nurturing environment where strong relationships with children and families form the foundation for learning. We are dedicated to fostering an inspiring and creative learning journey for your child. Our approach combines child-centred, play-based learning with guided inquiry and exploration, alongside carefully planned teacher-led opportunities.

Through everyday activities, we build children’s confidence and independence, celebrating and honouring each child’s unique qualities. While we follow the EYFS framework, we have also developed our own internal curriculum to ensure a truly holistic approach to each child’s development and learning. Within this supportive and enriching setting, children are introduced to key early skills—communication and language, literacy, numeracy, social understanding, and independence—so they can thrive and feel well-prepared for school. Our dedicated team supports the whole child, enabling progression from recognising phonics to working confidently in a group—skills often not typically seen until Reception. Every child is known and valued, and our teaching is tailored to nurture their interests and support their individual progress every step of the way. Explore below each room in more detail to see how we support your child at every stage of their development.

The children’s interests are at the heart of everything we do, driving meaningful learning experiences and celebrating exciting achievements along the way. Parents are invited to stay closely connected through Tapestry, our secure online learning platform, where they can view and contribute to their child’s ongoing journey.

Making the most of the great outdoors

The outdoor facilities at Holmwood House Preschool are outstanding. The building has its own gardens, as well as access to our outdoor learning area and the full 25 acre school campus when appropriate.   We provide a range of activities that promote the development of children’s personal, social, physical, and communication skills. Our approach to learning is tailored and child-centred, catering to each individual’s strengths, skills, abilities, and knowledge, while addressing both early academic and broader early years goals. We focus on encouraging children to create, explore, and discover through a variety of multi-sensory learning opportunities.

Specialist teachers

Our Preschool draws on specialist teachers and facilities from the main school, with swimming, performing arts and language teachers providing engaging sessions to our Preschool 3 children. This also helps children to understand different teaching styles and provides continuity for those children who are moving onto the main Holmwood House School site for their Reception year.  Alongside this the children receive bespoke one-to-one learning experiences with our teaching staff who will work on phonics, maths and school readiness.

Healthy eating

The Nursery offers healthy, homemade breakfast, lunch, tea, and snacks, planned using the Department of Education’s healthy eating guidance. All food is prepared daily by our chef in the kitchens at Holmwood House School.  All allergies and preferences are catered for in a sensitive and inclusive manner.

Our Preschool Journey

Preschool 2 (Ages 2–3)

Building Confidence Through Care, Curiosity, and Connection

At this vital stage in your child’s development, our team channels their energy into creating a fun, nurturing, and engaging environment. We know that joy and play are the foundations of curiosity—and curiosity is key to learning.

Children learn through play, guided by the expertise and experience of our dedicated staff. We focus on building the confidence and independence that will support them in reaching—and going beyond—the Early Years Foundation Stage goals. When children feel safe, happy, and valued at preschool, they’re more likely to move into their next stage of learning with enthusiasm and a love for discovery.

Just as important as our relationship with your child is the partnership we form with you. Open communication, mutual respect, and shared reflections help us work together to support your child’s development. We take time to listen, observe, and reflect with families to ensure that each child receives the individual attention and care they need to thrive.

Key Principles

  • Care, nurture, and consideration lie at the heart of everything we do, fostering warm relationships and emotional security.
  • Listening and reflection guide our approach—both with children and in our ongoing dialogue with parents.
  • We plan highly engaging activities using the exceptional facilities and specialist resources available at Holmwood House School and Holmwood Nursery.
  • We place a strong focus on developing communication and language, fine and gross motor skills, and personal, social and emotional development—laying important skill foundations for future learning.
  • We spend lots of time exploring outside, encouraging curiosity, resilience, and a love for the natural world.

Play-based inquiry and storytelling spark imagination and critical thinking, both indoors and outdoors.
Together with you, we aim to provide your child with the very best start—a joyful, secure foundation from which to grow, explore, and flourish.

Preschool 3 (ages 3-4)

Confidence, Curiosity, and School Readiness

As children move into the next stage of Nursery at Holmwood House (ages 3–4), they begin to take bold steps towards greater independence, deeper thinking, and readiness for school life. Building on the secure and nurturing foundation formed in our 2–3-year-old provision, this stage is all about growth—socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively.

Our passionate and experienced Nursery team is dedicated to supporting the holistic development of every child. We create an environment where children are encouraged to explore their ideas, work with others, and grow in confidence—skills that are essential for a smooth and successful transition into Reception.

Our Nursery experience goes far beyond a traditional setting. Children enjoy a wide range of enriching experiences, including sessions led by subject specialists in Music and Movement, PE and Languages, delivered by our Holmwood House School staff. These opportunities enrich each child’s learning experience, providing meaningful progression across key developmental areas and laying the groundwork for confident, successful transitions into the next stage of their education.

Key Principles

  • A strong emphasis on school readiness, with particular focus on building the emotional resilience, social awareness, and independence children need to thrive in a Reception classroom.
  • A well-balanced approach that blends structured learning with purposeful play, supporting skills such as turn-taking, sharing, listening, following instructions, and group collaboration.
  • A responsive, child-led learning environment where each child’s unique strengths, interests, and pace are respected—while gently introducing more formal elements like early phonics, numeracy, and problem-solving.
  • Rich, multi-sensory experiences that encourage creativity, exploration, and discovery, both indoors and in our outdoor learning spaces.
  • Specialist-led sessions in Music and Movement, Languages, and PE, helping children develop physical coordination, self-expression, and confidence.
  • Strong, supportive relationships with staff and peers that help to develop empathy, emotional regulation, and self-confidence—key building blocks for future learning.
  • A clear, intentional path from exploratory play to more purposeful learning, ensuring that each child is emotionally, socially, and developmentally prepared for the step into Reception.

Our aim is for every child to move forward from this stage not only ready for school—but eager and excited for what comes next: confident, curious, and full of enthusiasm for learning.
