Head’s Welcome

I am delighted to welcome you to Holmwood House School and Nursery. I hope that our website will help you to gain a flavour of the stimulating and nurturing environment of our school and the values we take pride in. However the best way to really get a feel for what makes Holmwood so special is to visit us, and we look forward to personally welcoming you to our school.

Schools are about discovery and growth which is why we focus our education on inspiring individuals by sparking curiosity in their learning, in and outside of the classroom. Small class sizes allow our high-quality teachers to create inspirational learning environments to encourage, support, and challenge each girl and boy for just that goal. Holmwood is a family school; we believe in partnership between pupils, teachers, and parents to enable each individual girl and boy to thrive and achieve their potential in and out of the classroom.

Holmwood has extensive grounds and fantastic facilities where our young people can learn new skills and find their niche. Our academic curriculum is ambitious and challenging but with stretch and support for all individuals. We are committed to providing a broad and balanced education so that we can help each girl or boy discover their own academic, artistic, musical, creative, and physical potential and help it to flourish.

We aim to ignite our pupils’ futures and prepare young people for life – character matters. We have an excellent balance between innovation and tradition, with the right amount of technology permeating through our academic curriculum. We help them understand how to face life’s challenges, seek support when needed, take appropriate risks, and treat one another with kindness and respect. Strong pastoral care is the lynchpin of why we personally know each individual at Holmwood House and their learning journey.

Holmwood has a proud reputation for turning out super young women and men, ready to take on their next challenge.

The learning journey can begin at a variety of different stages:

  • Children as young as 6 months can join our Nursery. Located a couple of miles from the school at Great Horkesley in a beautiful woodland setting, it offers great outdoor opportunities for children up to the age of 4.
  • From the ages of 2 to 11 children can join our PreSchool, Reception or the Prep School at our main location just outside Colchester at Lexden, which occupies over 25 acres of grounds.
  • From the age of 11 pupils can join our dynamic Secondary section of the school.

At whatever age, opportunity and ambition are encouraged. We prepare pupils for a multiplicity of different pathways, with academic aspiration, and the strengths of each child in mind.. We provide high-quality support and preparation for pupils seeking grammar or senior school entry at 11+. Our super senior school offers a high quality academic offer and a stimulating enrichment programme. These prepare our young people for 16+ exams as well as exciting them about the journey onto A levels and university or practical options at College, and develop the future skills that are attractive to employers.

I hope our website gives you a useful glimpse into life at Holmwood House; the spirit, enjoyment, and range of opportunities on offer. However, there is no substitute for a visit, and I look forward to welcoming you personally to Holmwood House.
