Get Your Child Reception Ready This Summer with Holmwood House

Starting school is a huge step, and the summer is a fantastic time to help your child feel excited, prepared, and confident for Reception. Here’s how you can support their smooth transition at home:

  • Foster Independence: Encourage self-sufficiency with tasks like putting on coats and shoes, using the toilet, tidying toys, and managing lunch boxes.
  • Practice Routines: Establish a daily schedule that mirrors a school day, including consistent meal and sleep times, getting dressed, and quiet story sessions.
  • Build Communication Skills: Engage in conversations by asking open-ended questions, encouraging them to express feelings, and practicing turn-taking.
  • Read Together Daily: Reading aloud is vital for early literacy. Ask questions about the story and introduce new words.
  • Play with Purpose: Simple games involving turn-taking, mark-making, counting, sorting, and matching using everyday objects can build essential skills.
  • Visit the School (if possible): Attending open days, “stay and play” sessions, or even just driving by can help your child feel more comfortable on their first day.

Laying the Foundations for Reception Success at Holmwood House

At Holmwood House, we believe a successful Reception journey begins long before the first school uniform. It starts in an environment where children feel safe, curious, and confident to explore. Our Nursery and Preschool settings, nestled in the countryside near Colchester, are designed to nurture, inspire, and prepare children from 6 months old for a lifetime of learning.

Inspiring a Lifelong Love of Learning

Whether your child joins us at Holmwood House Nursery or Holmwood Preschool, they’ll discover a vibrant environment that encourages imagination and exploration daily. Our experienced Early Years team expertly balances warmth and nurture with purposeful challenges, fostering independence, resilience, and a sense of belonging—all crucial for a successful transition into Reception and beyond.

Our Preschool and Nursery curriculum focuses on the whole child, nurturing their physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth with a personalised approach.

Ages 2–3: Nurturing Independence and Confidence

In these early years, we create a playful yet purposeful atmosphere where fun drives curiosity and learning. Through activities like problem-solving in the garden, collaborative art projects, and interactive story sessions, we develop communication, fine and gross motor skills, and emotional literacy.

Key approaches include:

  • Engaging, hands-on activities utilizing our stunning settings and specialist resources.
  • Encouraging confidence and independence through child-led exploration.
  • Developing strong communication and language skills through stories, conversation, and singing.
  • Supporting physical development through outdoor play, movement sessions, and fine motor tasks.

Ages 3–4: Getting Reception Ready

Our older preschoolers enjoy a dynamic Reception ready programme that helps them flourish academically and socially. They are gently introduced to early phonics and numeracy, experience structured routines, and begin to work independently and in groups.

What truly sets Holmwood House apart is access to subject-specialist teaching even at this young age. From swimming to music, movement, and languages, our preschoolers are immersed in a rich school experience well before they officially start school.

We provide:

  • Specialist-taught subjects to stretch and excite young minds.
  • A curriculum that develops key Reception skills in a developmentally appropriate way.
  • A focus on creativity, inquiry, and discovery across all areas of learning.
  • Continued emphasis on emotional wellbeing, social awareness, and positive relationships.

A Confident Start to Reception

By the time our children move into Reception at Holmwood House, they are confident, capable, and excited to learn. They recognise routines, understand how to make friends, ask questions, and take pride in their growing independence.

Holmwood House Nursery and Little Holmwood Preschool do more than prepare children for school—they lay the groundwork for a joyful, successful educational journey.

Two Sites, One Seamless Journey

Holmwood House offers two distinct yet interconnected Early Years settings, providing a seamless journey for your child:

  • Holmwood House Nursery | Ages 6 months – 4 years: Just a short drive from the main school, our Nursery is set within three acres of magical woodland, paddocks, and gardens. Open year-round, this nurturing space allows children to experience the wonder of nature while developing essential early skills.
  • Holmwood Preschool | Ages 2 – 4 years: Located on our expansive 25-acre main campus on Lexden Road, Little Holmwood Preschool combines purpose-built learning spaces with easy access to exceptional facilities. Your child can enjoy our indoor swimming pool, explore nature at our Forest School in The Spinney, or discover new talents in specialist teaching rooms!

Both of our Early Years sites are located in the countryside, ensuring children benefit from daily outdoor learning, supporting physical development, wellbeing, and natural curiosity.

What Our Parents Say

“Our daughter has thrived since starting in Pre-2. I would and do recommend it to anyone looking for a nursery.”

“In such a short space of time we have noticed such a difference in our little boy. When we pick him up he is chatty, having so much fun—and it’s actually difficult to get him to leave to come home! The range of activities is incredible and they combine learning with fun. We’ve seen a huge jump in his independence.”

“I’m really impressed with Preschool 2 and Preschool 3. The staff are truly excellent, and I can see how much thought has gone into integrating the preschool provision into wider school opportunities.”

At Holmwood House, we pride ourselves on building strong relationships with both children and families. This partnership ensures every child feels happy, secure, and confident in their learning journey.
