World Scholar’s Cup Success

Posted: 27th March 2025

Senior School Pupils Shine at the World Scholar’s Cup

On Sunday, 9th March, 17 pupils from Years 8, 9, and 10 set off to compete in the World Scholar’s Cup regional round held in Surrey. Over the course of two days, they took part in debating, collaborative writing, and various academic challenges designed to test their knowledge and critical thinking skills. In preparation for the event, pupils have been honing their skills with Mr. Collins during enrichment lessons after school, further enhancing their debating, writing, and critical thinking abilities.

The competition welcomed teams from across the country, with some pupils even flying in from Guernsey and Switzerland, bringing the total number of participants to over 300. Our Holmwood House teams rose to the occasion, demonstrating exceptional maturity, good manners and professionalism—qualities that were frequently praised by teachers from other schools and event organisers.

Beyond their academic success, they formed new friendships and returned home proudly clutching alpacas and an impressive collection of over 40 medals and awards!

Debating and Collaborative Writing Success

Max M and Alexander B were recognised as top debaters and selected to take part in the prestigious debate showcase panel. Eleanor B secured 1st place in Art and Music and an outstanding 2nd place overall in the collaborative writing task. Euna A achieved 1st place overall in the collaborative writing task. Hannah J, William R, and Eleanor B earned 5th place in the Team Writing Challenge. Islanna D’O, Euna A, and Hannah G achieved an impressive 3rd place in the Team Writing Challenge.

With all of our teams qualifying for the prestigious Global Round in Doha, Qatar this June, we are eagerly looking forward to even more remarkable achievements in the months to come. Congratulations to everyone involved!

What is the World Scholar’s Cup?

Founded by Daniel Berdichevsky the first World Scholar’s Cup took place in Korea in 2007: a small regional tournament hosted at the Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies. The first “global” round followed a few weeks later, bringing together students from Korea, Singapore, and the United States.

The idea behind the World Scholar’s Cup was to create something different than traditional academic competitions and conferences: a celebration of the joy of learning, a tournament as rewarding for the team that came in last as the for the team that came in first, an enrichment opportunity that motivated students not just to demonstrate their existing strengths but to discover new ones.

From that small beginning–a “world finals” more aptly described as a “world starts”–the World Scholar’s Cup has grown to reach tens of thousands of students in dozens of countries.
